Our Resources Are Running Out!
With the prediction that the world population will reach 9.5 billion by 2050, it is thought that the global food production system will be insufficient to meet this demand. Population growth, changes in the use of water resources, biodiversity loss, climate change and decrease in the quality of water resources puts a great pressure on meeting the food demand.
While fertile lands and clean water resources are allocated to feed production, it causes a serious increase in greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time that overfishing threatens the ecosystem in the oceans; fish stocks, which are the most preferred protein source worldwide in terms of hunting, aquaculture and high nutrition, are classified as either depleted or near extinction.
The Food Crisis Is Growing
(Our Forests Are Being Destroyed
75% of world soybean production is used as feed for common consumption animals such as poultry, livestock and aquaculture.
Soybean growers use deforestation to create agricultural lands to meet the increasing protein demand.
Deforestation, biodiversity losses, high water footprint and environmental destructions are rapidly moving towards the point of no return.
Confronting the Depletion of Fishes in Our Seas
20% of the world's cathed fishes are devoted to fishmeal production (20 million tons/year) to be used in aquaculture.
1/3 of non-targeted fishes caught with fish nets, along with the fish that are targeted to be caught to make fishmeal.
It is clear to see that in near future, we will understand the fish stock in the oceans is not unlimited.
Food Waste
While the World Health Organization reports that 1 person dies of hunger every 3 seconds, 35% of the food produced today becomes waste before reaching the consumer due to various reasons.
A Sustainable Alternative Solution!
In recent years, black soldier fly larvae have started to be preferred as an alternative animal protein source due to their efficiency in converting organic wastes, short life cycles, need of very little water, ability to convert vegetable sources with low protein quality into high quality animal protein. Fish meal and soybean meal have started to be used as an alternative to protein sources in poultry and aquaculture, due to their high feed conversion rate, more “sustainable” protein source and high protein content. Due to their high feed conversion rate, more “sustainable” protein source and high/rich protein content compared with fish meal and soybean meal, Black Soldier Fly Larvae have started to be used as an alternative protein source in poultry and aquaculture.
